Smart City Digital Infrastructure

Virtech builds a Smart City digital infrastructure based on FIWARE which leverages open-source technologies to create an integrated, efficient, and scalable urban environment. Virtech pilots this solution in the frames of the ExcellCity Project. FIWARE provides a universal set of standards for context data management, enabling seamless integration of various city services and data sources. At its core is the Orion Context Broker, which gathers, manages, and provides access to real-time context information from diverse sources, facilitating informed decision-making and enhanced service delivery.  This infrastructure promotes interoperability by adopting standard APIs and data models, allowing cities to avoid vendor lock-in and ensuring that applications are portable across different urban contexts. By integrating data from IoT sensors, existing municipal systems, and external sources, cities can break down traditional silos, fostering cross-departmental collaboration and innovation. Implementing a FIWARE-based Smart City infrastructure enables municipalities to monitor and manage urban services such as traffic flow, air quality, energy consumption, and public safety in real-time. This data-driven approach not only improves operational efficiency but also enhances the quality of life for citizens by supporting the development of innovative applications and services. Moreover, FIWARE’s commitment to open-source principles and standardization accelerates the digital transformation of cities, making smart solutions more accessible and cost-effective. By embracing FIWARE, cities can become engines of growth, turning into ICT enablers for innovation, economic development, and citizen well-being.
