
The WE-TRANSFORM project, funded by the EU, addresses the evolving impact of automation and digitalization on the transport sector’s workforce. Launched in December 2020, its primary goal is to develop an evidence-based, action-oriented agenda to help policymakers and stakeholders navigate the challenges posed by these technological advancements.
Recognizing that automation is reshaping labor requirements across all transport modes—from road and rail to aviation and shipping—the project emphasizes the need for updated skills and competencies among workers. To achieve this, WE-TRANSFORM employs a participatory approach, utilizing Collective Intelligence (CI) to foster collaboration among a diverse range of stakeholders. This inclusive method ensures that the perspectives of local authorities, operators, manufacturers, and workers are considered in shaping policies that facilitate a smooth transition.
A key component of the project is the creation of a cross-national living hub, designed as a knowledge and action platform. This hub serves as a collaborative space where participants can share insights, discuss challenges, and co-create solutions, ultimately guiding smarter decision-making in the face of rapid technological change.
Throughout its duration, WE-TRANSFORM has organized multiple workshops and focus group meetings, bringing together stakeholders to deliberate on the future of labor in the transportation sector. These events have culminated in the development of a comprehensive policy agenda aimed at seamlessly integrating digital advancements with workforce development. The project’s final conference was held on March 5, 2024, in Brussels, marking a significant milestone in its mission to bridge transport technology and labor.
