H2020 Large Scale Pilot ACTIVAGE

The ACTIVAGE project was a European initiative aimed at creating smart living environments to support active and healthy aging through Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. Running from January 2017 to September 2020, it established the first European IoT ecosystem across nine deployment sites in seven countries, integrating various IoT platforms to enhance interoperability and scalability.

Key objectives of ACTIVAGE included:

  • Developing the ACTIVAGE IoT Ecosystem Suite (AIOTES): A set of tools and methodologies to ensure interoperability among diverse IoT platforms.
  • Implementing Large-Scale Pilots: Deploying IoT-based solutions in real-life settings to support independent living for older adults.
  • Establishing a Reference Evaluation Framework: Assessing the impact and effectiveness of IoT-enabled services on active and healthy aging.
  • Promoting Co-Creation: Engaging stakeholders, including older adults and caregivers, in the design and development of user-centered solutions.

The project also focused on creating an open and sustainable ecosystem by launching open calls to involve third parties, especially SMEs, in developing innovative services and solutions.

One notable deployment was in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, where IoT-based home monitoring systems were implemented to support older adults recovering from stroke. This involved installing unobtrusive sensors to monitor daily activities, providing valuable data to healthcare professionals for personalized care.

Overall, ACTIVAGE demonstrated the potential of IoT technologies to enhance the quality of life for Europe’s aging population by fostering innovation and collaboration across sectors.
