A prototype of the Smart Bike (CloudBike) was developed as part of the VeloCity project. CloudBike establishes an integrated ecosystem of infrastructure, services, and CloudBike Kits tailored for cyclists in various user contexts, including secure city cycling, cycling for wellbeing, and digital social innovation campaigns for gathering user-generated data (UGD).
CloudBike Digital Ecosystem
CloudBike consists of:
- Cloud-based infrastructure for data collection and processing.
- Cyclist’s smart device (smartphone/tablet/PDA) serving as a computing and sensing hub, housed in a waterproof, impact-resistant mountable case, along with intelligent wearable sensors.
- Mobile application that utilizes both open data and UGD to deliver context-aware services, including an eCall emergency system.
Impact & Usability
CloudBike facilitates the development of bike-inclusive, user-centric multimodal Smart City transportation systems and marketable solutions leveraging open data and UGD. The user interface is designed for simplicity, featuring:
- Readable text and maps.
- Voice interaction via a headset (navigation, messages, alerts).
- A pair of physical buttons for switching between pre-programmed functions.
Pilot Trials
CloudBike has undergone pilot testing in Bulgaria, Italy, and Spain, demonstrating its potential for enhancing urban cycling experiences and smart mobility solutions.
